Animal diversity

Biodiversity is one of the factors that affect our planet. Therefore, knowing how many species there are on Earth, is one of the simplest but most difficult questions in all of science. However, the answer to this question is not yet clear, as the biodiversity effort (cbd) is limited to date.

Moreover, precise numbers are difficult to come by, for many species have not been described, and since the earliest estimates have been based on speculative evidence. The high classification of tax types (e.g., type of grant, category, order, family and type) has a consistent and predictable approach, so that the total number of species in each tax group can be estimated.

The total number of species on earth is estimated at 3 million to 100 million. According to the most recent estimates the total number of living things on earth is 8.7 million, 6.5 million of them live on earth and 2.2 million (about 25% of the total) live deep in the oceans. About 86% of the world's species and 91% of marine species are yet to be identified, described and listed.

All 1.72 million species have been identified, about 63861 are vertebrates, 3,674,000 plants, and 1,000 000 (57.86%) are insects.
